- Heightened sensitivity to sounds, sights, touch or smells.
- Difficulty in concentration, memory, or logical thought and speech that is hard to explain.
- Lack of initiative or a desire to participate in any activity.
- Anxiety or suspiciousness of others or an intense nervous feeling.
- A sense of unreality or a vague feeling of being disconnected from oneself or one’s surroundings.
- Uncharacteristic, peculiar behaviour.
- Unusual or exaggerated beliefs regarding personal or “magical” powers, to understand the meaning or influence events.
- Rapid or dramatic shifts in feelings or mood swings.
- Dramatic sleep and changes in appetite or deterioration in personal hygiene.
Causes
However, just a few of these symptoms cannot predict a mental disorder or illness. If a person experiences several of these symptoms together for prolonged periods of time, it could indicate a mental health problem. It is always advisable to seek the services of a mental health professional at the earliest. Advancements in medication are continually improving the outlook of people with mental illnesses. With sufficient psychological and social support, most people with mental disorders can have an active and fulfilled life.
