What is a Holter monitor ?

A holter monitor is a heart monitor that records your heart’s activity over twenty-four to forty-eight hours. If you experience heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat, but an EKG test cannot detect anything, a cardiac monitor can diagnose the problem. You can wear the holter monitor while you perform daily activities.

Who needs a holter monitor ?

Your doctor might advise you to wear a holter monitor if you experience symptoms such as racing heartbeats and palpitations, yet nothing could be detected from an ECG.

Why is a holter monitor test done ?

From this test, your doctor will be able to detect the causes behind the following :

1. Arrhythmia

2. Unexplained dizziness

3. Heart palpitations

With the help of a heart monitor, they can determine whether-

1. Your heart is getting enough oxygen

2. If your pacemaker is working properly

3. If your heart medications are working

Moreover, from the results, the doctor can tell if you have the following conditions.

1. Tachycardia

2. Bradycardia

3. Atrial fibrillation

4. PVCs or Premature Ventricular Contractions
